I've had a strong interest in Adidas outdoor shoes, and I was really excited to get the chance to review the Adidas Terrex Fast R Mid GTX hiking boots. When I first opened the box, I was immediately drawn to their sleek and modern design. It's completely different from the bulky and outdated look of traditional hiking boots. From the outside, they almost resemble light trail running shoes.

The Terrex Fast R Mid GTX uses an integrated lacing system, which is commonly found in cross-country running shoes. This system is elastic, convenient, and prevents the laces from coming loose during movement. During my testing, this feature made a big difference, especially when climbing uphill. I never had any issues with the laces coming undone.

Although the integrated lacing system is safe and reliable, there is one downside. Compared to traditional laces, it can be more time-consuming to put on. However, Adidas has thoughtfully included a shoe strap at the back, making it easier to slip the shoes on and off.

When using the integrated lacing system, it's important to follow the correct method. Don't force it. On the upper part of the shoe, there's a black hook. To remove the laces, you need to take them out from the hook first before moving on. Everything is straightforward and easy to use.

The upper is made of mesh and synthetic materials combined with a GORE-TEX waterproof and breathable membrane. The craftsmanship is excellent, with clean stitching and attention to detail. These shoes are built to handle extreme outdoor conditions.

There’s a black triangle on the tongue of the shoe that helps prevent sand from entering through the gaps. You can see how high the GORE-TEX lining is, wrapping around the ankle for extra protection.

On the arch, you'll find the Traxion logo, indicating that these shoes use the Traxion outsole for maximum grip and stability on mountain terrain. They also feature a Torsion cage-shaped midsole support system to reduce excessive twisting and protect your feet during intense activity.

The sole is made of Continental rubber, known for its exceptional grip. Continental is a German company with over 150 years of experience in producing high-quality tires and rubber products. Their reputation speaks for itself.

The heel pattern is designed differently from the forefoot and arch, providing better traction on various surfaces.

The insole features an Ortholite cushioning system, offering comfort and breathability. It's bright and colorful, adding a nice touch to the overall design.

The 3D three-dimensional cut design fits the foot perfectly, ensuring a snug and secure fit during outdoor activities. No sliding or discomfort, even after long hikes.
The insole is laminated fabric, which is breathable and has antibacterial properties for freshness.
To thoroughly test the performance of these shoes, I chose the challenging Wutaishan hiking trail in Shanxi Province, reaching an elevation of 3,061.1 meters. The trail included alpine meadows, gravel paths, rocky trails, and muddy sections. The temperature was around 20°C, and the weather was clear in the morning but rainy in the afternoon—perfect for a real-world test.
At the start of the hike, the morning sun reflected off the upper of the shoes. Even though this was my first time wearing them, they felt incredibly comfortable right away. My wide feet didn’t feel pinched, which is rare for me. It shows that Adidas has done a great job with their Asian foot design.

Wutaishan is a high-altitude area covered mostly by alpine meadows. The soft ground provided excellent support, making it easy to walk and enjoy the scenery.

Even the dirt paths weren’t a problem.
After the previous day's rain, some parts of the trail were muddy, but the shoes handled it well without slipping. The soles performed exceptionally.

Not all the trail was smooth. There were sections of gravel, where the 3D FORMOTION system truly shone. It helped stabilize my ankles, reduced the risk of sprains, and improved control and cushioning on uneven terrain.

Walking on gravel, the system helped maintain balance and prevented falls. Sometimes, I accidentally stepped on rocks, but the toe protection plate kept my feet safe from punctures.
The path to the North Platform of Wutaishan was a rocky road with a washboard-like surface. Normally, such roads would be painful in regular hiking boots, causing blisters. But the Terrex Fast R Mid GTX provided excellent cushioning thanks to the adiPRENE technology, giving me a springy feel underfoot and making the walk much easier.
Overall, the Adidas Terrex Fast R Mid GTX is a versatile, comfortable, and highly functional hiking shoe that performs well in a variety of conditions. It's perfect for serious hikers looking for both style and performance.
