In 2013, high-speed inkjet printing technology experienced rapid development, becoming a major topic in the media and a standout feature at industry exhibitions. More and more printing companies began to consider investing in high-speed inkjet printing equipment, while manufacturers also poured significant resources into R&D to bring innovative products to market.
The high-speed web inkjet printing market has seen increased activity, fueled by growing interest from various sectors. Initially, the research and application of this technology were mainly focused on direct mail and on-demand publishing, with most solutions being web-based. However, as the cost-performance ratio of direct mail improved and market demand fluctuated, investment in high-speed inkjet printing for business letters slowed down. Major DM customers started to cut back on spending.
On the other hand, demand for high-speed inkjet printing in the on-demand publishing sector surged. Over the past year, the installed capacity of high-speed web inkjet printers in the publishing industry saw a dramatic increase. Companies like Phoenix Media and Beijing Daheng Digital have adopted Kodak Prosper high-speed inkjet printers, and new clients such as PetroChina Color Printing and China Education Books Import and Export Co. have also made the switch. These printers are primarily used for black-and-white printing, highlighting the strong demand for monochrome on-demand publishing in the domestic market.
Meanwhile, Canon Océ’s ColorStream 3000 web high-speed inkjet system was installed at Shanghai Donnelly, marking a significant step forward in digital inkjet printing. Compared to smaller players like Dongguan Hucai and Beijing Post, who also purchased similar systems, Donnelly's move reflects a broader trend among printing giants exploring new opportunities in digital inkjet technology. Recently, it was reported that Phoenix Media plans to introduce a color web high-speed inkjet production line, though the details remain unclear.
High-speed inkjet printing is also making its way into the newspaper industry. Some newspaper groups have started integrating high-speed nozzles into their printing processes, combining mass production with personalized marketing strategies. For example, Shenzhen Press Group Printing Co., Ltd. has begun experimenting with this approach.
In the packaging sector, Landa’s web and sheet-fed high-speed inkjet printing equipment is still under testing, but the packaging market is expected to become a major platform for this technology in the future.
Looking ahead, sheet-fed high-speed inkjet printing holds great potential. While the global installed base of web high-speed inkjet printers is larger, the future outlook for sheet-fed high-speed inkjet machines is promising. Although current models operate at around 3,000 sheets per hour—far slower than traditional offset presses that can print over 15,000 sheets per hour—innovative technologies must go through a development phase before they can disrupt the market. Sheet-fed high-speed inkjet technology is currently in this stage.
In the coming years, sheet-fed high-speed inkjet printing is expected to become the industry standard. Several manufacturers are set to release new models, continuously improving the technology. Screen and Fujifilm already offer sheet-fed high-speed inkjet printers, and Komori and Konica Minolta’s IS29 model is soon to be launched. Features such as pre-coating and LED-UV curing represent key technological advancements in these devices.
