I've had a strong interest in Adidas outdoor shoes, and I was really lucky to get the chance to test the Adidas Terrex Fast R Mid GTX hiking shoes. When I first opened the box, I was immediately drawn in by its sleek and modern design. It looks more like a lightweight trail running shoe than the bulky, outdated hiking boots I'm used to seeing. The overall aesthetic is fresh and stylish, which makes it stand out.
The shoes feature an integrated lacing system, a common design in cross-country running shoes. This system is elastic, convenient, and prevents the laces from coming loose during movement. During my actual testing, especially when I was running uphill, this system made a big difference. I never had any issues with the laces coming undone, which gave me peace of mind.
Although the integrated lacing system is reliable, there's one downside. Compared to traditional laces, it can be a bit more tedious to put on, but Adidas has thoughtfully included a heel strap to make the process easier. This helps you pull the shoe on smoothly without struggling.
When using the integrated lacing system, it's important to follow the correct method. Don't force it—there's a black hook on the outer side of the upper. To remove the laces, you need to take them out from the hook first before moving on. Everything is designed for ease of use.
The upper is made of mesh and synthetic materials combined with GORE-TEX for enhanced waterproofing and breathability. The craftsmanship is excellent, with clean lines and well-finished seams. These shoes are built to handle tough outdoor conditions.
There's a black triangle on the tongue that acts as a barrier to prevent sand or debris from entering through the gaps. This shows how high the quality of the GORE-TEX lining is, as it wraps around the ankle for added protection.
On the arch area, you'll find the Traxion logo, indicating that these shoes use Traxion outsoles for maximum grip. This is ideal for mountainous terrain and helps prevent slips. Additionally, the midsole features a Torsion cage structure that provides stability and reduces the risk of injury from excessive twisting.
The soles are made with Continental rubber, known for its superior grip and durability. This German brand has been producing high-quality rubber for over 150 years, so you can trust the performance of these shoes.
The sole pattern on the heel is different from the front and midfoot areas, offering better traction on various surfaces. The insole is equipped with Ortholite technology, providing comfort, breathability, and a vibrant color that adds a nice touch.
The 3D three-dimensional cut design fits the foot perfectly, reducing slippage and improving overall comfort during long hikes. The insole also includes laminated fabric that’s breathable, deodorizing, and antibacterial, keeping your feet fresh all day.
To fully test the shoes, I chose the challenging Wutai Mountain hike in Shanxi Province, reaching an elevation of 3,061.1 meters. The trail included alpine meadows, gravel paths, rocky terrain, and muddy sections. The weather was clear in the morning but turned rainy in the afternoon, making it a real test of the shoes' performance.
At the start of the hike, the sun reflected off the upper of the shoes. Even though these were my first time wearing them, they felt very comfortable right away. My wide feet didn’t feel pinched, and the fit was surprisingly snug yet not tight—something rare to find in hiking shoes.
Walking through the soft alpine meadows was effortless. The soles provided great support, and I enjoyed the scenery while feeling confident in my steps. The dirt path wasn’t an issue either.
After the rain, some parts of the trail became muddy, but the shoes handled it well. There was no slipping, which showed the excellent grip of the soles.
Gravel sections tested the shoes further, but the 3D FORMOTION system helped maintain balance and reduce strain on my ankles. The protective plate also came in handy, preventing rocks from piercing through the sole.
The stone road leading to the North Platform was rough and hard, but the cushioning from the AdiPRENE midsole made walking much easier. It felt like there was a small spring under my feet, making each step light and comfortable. I walked the entire trail without any blisters or discomfort.
