Groundwater-gas determination - gas chromatography

The gas samples, either evolved gas collected using the drainage method or dissolved gas obtained through vacuum degassing, are introduced into the gas chromatograph. A carrier gas is then used to push the sample through a chromatographic column, where the different gas components are separated based on their interaction with the stationary phase. After separation, the gases flow into a thermal conductivity detector, which measures changes in thermal conductivity and generates a signal. This signal is recorded as a chromatogram. The concentration of each gas component is determined by analyzing the peak height or area using the external standard method, allowing for accurate quantification of the individual components in the sample. This process ensures reliable and reproducible results, making it a widely used technique in gas analysis.
