Label giant launches RFID series

US giant Tyco recently announced the development of a series of radio frequency identification (RFID) devices. The SensorID series includes RFID tags, readers, smart stands and information systems to ensure that retailers can solve problems in the supply chain and map out product sales trends. Tyco owns Sensormatic, the world's largest supplier of electronic anti-theft products (EAS) labels and antennas.

For more than 30 years, Sensormatic has sold more than 4 billion EAS tags and trademarks, and installed more than 60,000 systems worldwide. Tyco plans to use Sensormatic's position in the retail industry to introduce the company's SensorID family of products. RFID tags can be integrated into existing EAS tags and trademarks. SensorID devices will be able to track goods, prevent theft in the supply chain, and reduce the incidence of shoplifting. According to a survey conducted by the University of Florida, the global retail industry spends about $5 billion annually on paperwork and management. Tyco claims that RFID technology will help reduce this data and reduce inventory and supply chain costs.
