Selection of lubricants for printing equipment

The lubricating materials of printing and related machinery are mainly grease (snow oil) and lubricating oil (machine oil). The printing machinery also needs to use different types of lubricating oil according to the different needs of various machine parts. Such as chain oil, air pump oil or gear box oil, etc.

The selection of high-quality lubricating oil can be used for reference and comparison from its characteristics such as viscosity, oxidation resistance, abrasion resistance, water separation, etc.

Viscosity

Viscosity is one of the characteristics of lubricating oil. It is measured according to the fluidity of the oil at a fixed temperature. Most of the international grades of lubricants are graded by SAE or ISO grades. Generally, viscosity grades 68, 150 and 320 of printing machines are graded by ISO. The higher the number, the greater the viscosity. [Viscosity Index] is the rate of change of the viscosity of the lubricant in a known temperature range. A low viscosity index oil indicates that the viscosity changes correspondingly with temperature. Conversely, a motor oil with a high viscosity index means that the corresponding change in viscosity with temperature is small. Lubricating oil must remove and cool the heat generated by friction in the circulating lubrication system of the printing press. Therefore, selecting [High Viscosity Index] lubricating oil can keep the viscosity stable, greatly reduce the heat of the printing press, and prolong the service life of the printing press.

Antioxidant

Lubricating oils are complex hydrocarbons. When the class is exposed to air and heat, it slowly combines with the oxygen in the air to change its chemical nature, resulting in unsuitable use for lubrication. The combination of oil and oxygen slowly becomes oxidation, and the product is called oxide. It is not difficult for printing machinery to find out that the changed tar and the original oil are greatly changed when the lubricant is replaced, and the impurities found in the oil separator are more certain that the lubricant loses its normal lubrication function due to oxidation. Selecting oil with high oxidation resistance can extend the oil change time, reduce the erosion of the mechanical seals, and reduce the oil leakage of the printing press. Because the oxidized engine oil will become acid and harden the seals, the possibility of oil leakage from printing machinery increases.

Abrasion resistance

Suppose we put two iron blocks with blistered surface together, and then drag the top iron block hard, it may require 15 pounds of force; if we add a little lubricating oil between the two iron surfaces, maybe It takes only 2.5 pounds of force to pull it apart; so we say [oil reduces the friction between the iron pieces]. Under a high-power microscope, the contact surface of the two iron blocks actually shows that countless small peaks and valleys pinch each other to prevent each other from sliding freely. If there is oil in between, the valley is filled and the mutual restraint is lifted. The iron block above can easily slide away from the bottom one. This phenomenon is enough to show that the lubricating oil reduces wear. The additives contained in the high-wear-resistant lubricating oil can more fully fill up the [small peak valley] on the metal, so that the various parts are more fully protected. Secondly, through the reduction of friction, each component in the printing machine has a longer service life.

Separation

If water is mixed with lubricating oil together, an emulsion will be formed, and its lubricating performance will be poor. The water-based lubricating oil can be automatically separated from water after being mixed with water and still for a period of time. This characteristic is called anti-emulsification, and the rapid separation of oil and water indicates that the lubricant has good anti-emulsification, and vice versa. When the lubricating oil is agitated and pumped in the printing press, the moisture in the air is combined with the lubricating oil, resulting in an emulsion with poor lubricity. Choosing a highly water-repellent lubricating oil can make each component in the machine sufficiently protect and reduce the chance of oxidation.

The above lubricating oil characteristic data can be used for reference and comparison by the lubricating oil specification tables provided by major oil companies. The use of higher-quality lubricating oil will definitely bring long-term and maximum production benefits to manufacturers' [life tools] !
