Low pressure technology: the strongest superconducting magnetic field

The Japanese Institute of Superconductivity Engineering, jointly administrated by the industry and the government, announced on January 20th that they have used the high-temperature superconducting magnets to successfully create the world’s strongest magnetic field. A superconducting magnet shaped like a permanent magnet is cooled to an absolute temperature of 77 degrees (-196 degrees Celsius), and a magnetic field having a strength of 3.3 Tesla can be generated, which is 1.5 times the original magnetic field strength. High-temperature superconducting magnets not only improve the performance of sewage purification devices and magnetic tomography devices, but are also said to replace permanent magnets used in electric motors.
The high-temperature superconducting magnets developed in this research are produced by mixing a niobium compound having superconductivity with a niobium compound having no superconductivity. The non-superconducting compound is crushed into fine particles in copper-copper and dispersed into micro-particles of only a few hundred nanometers, which are then divided, dissolved and solidified with a low oxygen concentration of only 1%, and finally added from the outside. Magnetic field, made of magnets.
The two 5-cm-diameter high-temperature superconducting magnets thus produced were put together, and the magnetic flux density that became the magnetic field performance index was measured. As a result, when the absolute temperature was 77 degrees, the strength was measured to be 3.3 Tesla. The research results are based on the new energy technology development plan of the Industrial Technology Institute of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, and are commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Comprehensive Development Agency.
