See how makers knit sweaters: 3D printing digital cylinder knitting machine

Cylindrical knitting is a technique used to create seamless tubular braids. Cylindrical knitting can be done manually or on a knitting machine. This is a popular method of weaving hats, socks, sweaters and other common knitwear.

Ordinary knitting machines for children can be bought for only $100, while more powerful machines range in price from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. The knitting process is somewhat similar to 3D printing in that a 3D object is formed layer by layer with a single yarn... This process also requires design elements. The idea behind circular knitting machines is to make the weaving process faster, and the producers can spend more time on designing or prototyping their designs.

This circular knitting machine and its fast weaving ability played an important role in the First World War. It was used to quickly generate socks for soldiers - an important material to prevent war. For the hobby of this knitting machine, visual artists Mar Canet and Varvara Guljajeva spent more than three months developing an open source digital knitting machine, Circular Knitic. They explained:

“With the rapid development of digital manufacturing technology, 3D printers are gradually becoming a must-have item on every creative studio desk. There are many projects in Fab Labs and maker space that make hard surface objects. And “soft” projects like textiles are rare. In history, the first digital manufacturing tool, the electronic knitting machine, was discontinued in 1976 and was forgotten. Our goal is to integrate textile manufacturing into In the maker culture, we created Circular Knitic."

Interestingly, the word "fabricate" in English has the root of fabric (cloth, fabric).

The two artists published a detailed tutorial on the digital circular knitting machine project on the open source hardware website Instructables (click to browse the tutorial). It can be said that this is a rather complicated project that requires laser cutting, 3D printing, some basic woodworking, and assembly of electronic devices. There are a total of 13 steps from the beginning to the completion of the tutorial, which is very detailed and even teaches you how to start the needle (starting the first term). 3D printed files are available for free download, and the developer carefully notes how many copies each part needs to print, as well as suggested print setup requirements.

Here are the other consumables needed to build this automatic knitting machine:

60 needles

Nema23 stepper motor

Big Easy stepper motor drive

Arduino Uno

Fan 12v 40mm x 40mm

12v power supply, wire

Carbon fiber tensioner 2 mm (55 cm)

14 bearings (5 mm × 10 mm × 4 mm)

Screws and nuts, motor shafts, switches, springs

60 50 mm long paper clips

2 150 mm long Makerbeam (an X-bar)

2 60mm long Makerbeam

Makerbeam 40 mm

Makerbeam screw

6 L-shaped Makerbeam

4 claws

Despite a lot of things, when you've got everything ready, it's easy to assemble, a bit like an IKEA furniture with Arduino.

When everything is assembled, you can use it to weave a sock, hat, sweater or something. The operation of this machine is also very simple, you only need to input the code corresponding to the fabric, such as socks, into the machine. The rest is done by the machine.

Of course, if you don't intend to make it yourself, you can also purchase Guljajeva and Canet's ready machine kit or the already assembled machine through the online store.
