2020 Food Safety Development Recaps in Anticipation for 2021 and Beyond – The Future is Now!

In the midst of the ongoing pandemic, ensuring the safety and quality of the global food supply remains paramount. As the FDA has emphasized, there is currently no evidence suggesting that COVID-19 can spread through food or food packaging. However, it's crucial for both the industry and the general public to stay informed about regulatory updates and adhere to science-backed guidelines. While we eagerly await advancements in vaccine distribution, following CDC, WHO, and public health protocols to minimize virus transmission remains essential. This year has undoubtedly posed unprecedented challenges for the food industry, but let's take a moment to reflect on some pivotal food safety developments that could significantly impact the North American landscape moving forward: On July 13th, the FDA introduced its vision for the 'New Era of Smarter Food Safety,' aiming to establish a more digitized, traceable, and secure food network to curb foodborne illnesses. Then, on August 22nd, the FSIS-USDA hosted a virtual meeting to introduce the "Roadmap to Reducing Salmonella," aligning with the Healthy People 2030 objectives. Additionally, on November 18th, the FDA rolled out a new outbreak investigation tool designed to facilitate swift responses by the CORE (Coordinated Outbreak Response & Evaluation) team. Recently, the FDA flagged a manufacturing facility for inspectional violations due to improper tool storage and use, which resulted in cross-contamination of ready-to-eat products. This underscores our longstanding assertion that tools are potential carriers of contamination and must be carefully selected, utilized, cleaned, stored, and maintained. Looking ahead to 2021, several key food safety developments warrant attention: The FDA has proposed a rule for enhanced food traceability under Section 204 of FSMA. Expectations are high for the finalization of this rule and further guidance, particularly concerning the Food Traceability List. SQF Edition 9 Code books were released later in 2020, adopting a more sector-specific approach with an emphasis on fostering food safety culture. These new codes align with the latest GFSI Benchmarking Documents Version 2020. SQF Edition 9 is slated to become the official auditing standard starting May 24, 2021. GFSI version 2020 has also expanded its scope of recognition to include Hygienic Design categories JI and JII. In the near future, we can anticipate heightened requirements for hygienically designed facilities, equipment, tools, and utensils within food safety systems.
