Karen is a regular contributor and blogger for *Day Undefined*. In her series, “Karen’s Corner,†she invites readers to join her in exploring her passion for gardening and other hobbies, sharing practical tips on how to make these activities more accessible and enjoyable. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this blog is designed with small-space gardeners in mind.
I’ve included some helpful articles about balcony gardening, but there’s always more to learn. I may have missed a few points, so feel free to explore further. Most importantly, **always prioritize safety**. While I’m not a professional gardener, I’ve been experimenting with adaptive gardening for over 10 years due to Ataxia, transitioning from in-ground to container gardening. Recently, I’ve also started my first raised bed garden and am diving into hydroponics—more on that in future posts.
In addition to the links below, I encourage you to do your own research online. I don’t claim to be an expert, but I share tips based on my experiences gardening on my deck and front door. I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel—I just want to help others make gardening easier and more accessible.

**Here are some of my top tips for small-space gardening:**
- **Start Small:** Decide if you want to grow flowers or edibles. Don’t get overwhelmed—enjoy the little victories first. You can start with just one or two plants.
- **Stay Seated:** Most tasks can be done while seated. If you need to lift something heavy, do it while sitting, keeping the object close to your body for better balance.
- **Set Up Your Workspace:** Use a patio table and chair with a cushion. Make sure you have enough space for tools, soil, compost, and mulch. Keep walking paths clear and have a "reacher" tool handy.
- **Use Long-Handle Tools:** These reduce the need to bend, making gardening easier on your back and knees.
- **Wear Gardening Gloves:** I use long rose gloves to protect my arms from thorns. There are many types available—cotton, plastic-coated, leather, and even fun designs like the purple, red, and turquoise ones I have.

- **Know Your Zone & Light:** Check your USDA planting zone and understand the light conditions on your balcony. Research which plants thrive in full sun, shade, or part shade.
- **Avoid Impulse Buying:** Do some research before purchasing plants. Consider what will work best for your space, light, and maintenance level.
- **Plan Your Watering System:** I keep covered buckets on my deck to collect rainwater. For smaller plants, I dunk them in a water-filled basket for deeper watering. For larger containers, I use buried soda bottles as drip irrigation systems.
- **Get a Gardening Partner:** A helper can assist with heavy lifting or provide guidance. Let them know in advance when you’ll need their help.
**Most Important Tip:** Find a gardening partner. It could be someone who helps with heavy tasks or someone who shares your passion. Communication is key—let them know when you need assistance and what kind of help you require.
**A Few More Notes:** I use two aluminum walkers I bought at a thrift store for easy mobility and carrying supplies. I added trays and painted them for fun. They’re not necessary, but I love adding a personal touch.
**Remember:** “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.†I’ve had my fair share of failures too—mostly because I didn’t read the instructions. But balcony gardening is totally possible, fun, and rewarding. So go ahead—plant something, watch it grow, and enjoy the journey!
**Happy, joyful gardening!**
