Karen's Corner: Companion plants for your vegetable garden

Whether you have a large backyard or just a small balcony, did you know that planting certain crops together can actually improve your garden’s health? These are called companion plants, and they can help repel pests, provide shade, or even boost the flavor of your vegetables. Pests can be a real headache in any garden. I’ve stood on our deck and seen an entire blueberry bush stripped of its leaves by caterpillars—yikes! Using companion plants is a natural and eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides.

For more detailed information, I highly recommend reading this comprehensive article. It's a bit long, but if you scroll down about a third of the way, you'll find a helpful companion planting chart that lists which vegetables grow well together and how they benefit each other. This chart was created by one of my favorite resources, the Farmers Almanac.

In my own garden, I've found that marigolds are excellent at keeping unwanted bugs away. They also add a splash of color. Plus, basil has a strong scent that deters those little lizards that used to hang out on our deck. And if you're dealing with mice or chipmunks, lemon-scented herbs like lemon balm or mint can help keep them at bay too.

Please excuse the pop-up ads—this site is still worth bookmarking. Happy planting!
