Recently, a UK-based startup named Naturebytes launched an intriguing crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The product, called the Wildlife Cam Suite, is an automated camera system built around the Raspberry Pi. Designed to help kids explore and photograph wildlife in their natural environment, it aims to deepen their understanding of nature while introducing them to technology. The camera’s housing can be customized using 3D printing, allowing for personalized designs that suit different environments and needs.
On their Kickstarter page, Naturebytes states, “The importance of teaching children computing, programming, 3D design, and 3D printing is growing rapidly, but there are still few engaging activities and projects that bring these skills to life—something we’re concerned about.â€
“There’s a common belief that technology keeps kids indoors, but Naturebytes takes a different approach by combining cutting-edge tech with the wonder of wildlife. This encourages children to learn new skills and participate in meaningful, outdoor team activities. We want to show that technology and nature can coexist, not clash.â€
The waterproof field photography kit supports various Raspberry Pi models, including the A-type version. It comes with essential components like the Raspberry Pi, a battery pack, a Pi camera, and an infrared sensor. Once deployed, the system detects nearby animals and automatically captures photos or videos. As the project is open-source, users can customize and upgrade its features, such as enabling WiFi uploads after each capture.
For 3D printing enthusiasts, the most exciting part of the project is the development kit offered by Naturebytes. This kit enables makers to build their own automatic wildlife cameras using their own 3D printers and Raspberry Pi. “This is designed for advanced makers, developers, and designers,†the company explains.
If you already own a 3D printer and have experience in making, this kit provides all the necessary electronics and design files for you to experiment and build your own camera. You can also share your modifications with the Naturebytes community. In essence, this allows makers to test out various shapes, camera setups, and 3D printed materials to better blend into the environment or meet specific requirements.
Naturebytes has set a funding goal of $45,000. The assembled Wildlife Cam camera is priced at $134, while the development kit is available for $71. “We’ve found a new way to take learning beyond the classroom and computer desk,†the company says.
