Media Information: Orrick's NAS network storage system consists of 5 Seagate 2TB hard drives configured in RAID 5 mode, with the file system set to HFS+ for Mac OS.

Fault Description:
Darth Technology recently received a NAS device from an old customer who used it to store a large amount of HD video content. The user reported that the device started making unusual noises about a week before the incident. At first, they didn't pay much attention, but after a sudden power outage, the files became inaccessible. This led them to seek professional data recovery assistance.
Data Recovery Process:
Upon inspection, it was found that the fourth hard drive had bad sectors and was partially mirrored. The team created an image of the faulty drive and used it along with the other four drives for low-level analysis. By determining the block size, disk order, and rotation direction of the RAID 5 array, the data was successfully reconstructed. A total of 3.6TB of data was recovered in just 8 hours, and a full verification confirmed that all files were restored without any loss.

Data Recovery Results: 100% of the data was successfully recovered.
Customer Advice:
In today’s era of big data, network storage solutions are no longer limited to enterprises—they’re increasingly being adopted by individual users as well. More and more small NAS devices have entered the consumer market. In addition to the Orwick model mentioned here, Darth Technology has also recently handled cases involving Western Digital's My Book Live series. While these devices are convenient for daily use, it's crucial to back up important data regularly. Once a drive fails or becomes corrupted, especially if the manufacturer uses underlying encryption, recovery can become significantly more complex and costly.
