Leak detection in rotary evaporators is a common issue that users may encounter. One effective method is using phenolphthalein test paper, as ammonia is alkaline and will cause the paper to turn red. Any area that doesn’t frost properly is likely a leak point. Alternatively, soapy water can be used to identify leaks by looking for bubbles. For fluorescent or halogen-based leaks, halogen lamps or leak detectors can be employed, or soapy water can still serve as an effective alternative.
During inspection, start by visually checking the evaporator tube for oil traces, as Freon and oil mix easily. When a Freon leak occurs, oil may also escape from the leak point. Using a halogen lamp, if there is a Freon leak, the flame will change color—ranging from blue to green, light green, grass green, purple green, or even purple. However, if the flame turns dark green or purple, it indicates the presence of phosgene, which is toxic and should not be tested for long periods.
To ensure safe and efficient operation of your rotary evaporator, follow these maintenance instructions:
1. Before use, carefully inspect the instrument to make sure the glass bottle is intact and all interfaces match.
2. Wipe each connection with a soft cloth and apply a small amount of vacuum grease. Make sure to cover the grease after use to prevent contamination.
3. Avoid over-tightening any connections; loosen them slightly to prevent damage from prolonged tightness.
4. Turn on the power switch first, then gradually increase the speed. When stopping, turn off the machine before switching off the power.
5. Do not tighten PTFE switches too much, as this can damage the glass components.
