Media Information: Orrick's NAS network storage system consists of 5 Seagate 2TB hard drives configured in RAID 5 mode, with the HFS+ file system running on a MAC system.

Failure Description:
Darth Technology recently received an older customer's NAS device from Orrick, which was used to store all HD video content. The user reported that for about a week, there were abnormal noises coming from the device, but they didn't pay much attention. After a sudden power outage, the data became inaccessible.
Data Recovery Process:
Upon inspection, it was found that the fourth hard drive had bad sectors and was mirrored. We created an image of the fourth disk and used it along with the other four disks for low-level analysis. This helped determine the block size, disk order, and cycle direction of the RAID 5 configuration. Using this information, we reconstructed the array and successfully extracted the data. The total amount of data recovered was 3.6TB, and it took approximately 8 hours to complete the extraction. The data was then verified, and the recovery was confirmed to be 100% successful.

Data Recovery Results: 100% of the data was successfully recovered.
Advice to Customers:
With the rise of the big data era, network storage systems are no longer limited to enterprises but are increasingly used by individual users. More and more compact NAS devices have been introduced into the market. In addition to the Orrick model mentioned here, Darth Technology has also recently handled cases involving Western Digital's My Book Live series. While these devices are convenient for everyday use, it is crucial for users to back up important data regularly. Once a disk fails, especially if it’s encrypted at the file level or has proprietary formatting, recovery can become significantly more challenging and costly. Always remember: prevention is better than cure when it comes to data loss.
