Good use of imported waste paper

The author visited the Haindl paper mill in Germany several years ago. The factory uses 100 percent old newspapers as raw materials to produce newsprint. The strength and opacity of the products have reached first-rate levels. Some newspaper companies in China have purchased it, and their quality is highly evaluated.

Why can newsprint produced with all waste paper as raw material achieve stable high quality? The author of papermaking is an amateur, but during the visit, he discovered that apart from advanced equipment and reasonable technology, the factory also has unique features in the procurement and management of waste paper.

The waste paper used in this plant came from the United Kingdom. After a relatively long period of trial and comparison, the factory determined and relatively stabilized its waste paper suppliers, which resulted in a relatively stable collection of old newspapers used in the factory (thereby guaranteeing the use of old newspapers. Stable quality and supply stability, and the purchase of recent "new" old newspapers. After the waste paper arrives at the factory, the warehouse manager will register the incoming waste paper and use it first, so the Haindl plant guarantees the “freshness” that is most suitable for the plant's equipment and processes from the first pass of raw materials. Old newspapers, thus ensuring the stable quality of the product.

China's Shanghai Hansong potential paper industry also uses 100% waste paper to produce newsprint. The factory's products also have a good reputation. I think they must also have a successful experience in the procurement and use of waste paper. The author also accompanied the American waste paper exporters to visit some domestic paper mills. In a paper mill in Lanxi City, Zhejiang Province, we saw some migrant workers sort the imported OCCs and put some of the all-wood pulp cattle cartons on the cardboard box surface. After the paper is torn off, it will be used as a hanging material for the plant's dried noodles to reduce costs. According to the U.S. waste paper merchant, similar practices he had seen at Indian paper mills.

China is now one of the major importers of imported waste paper. In 2000, the amount of waste paper imported may be 3 million tons, and imported waste paper has become one of the indispensable papermaking raw materials in China. Therefore, how to make good use of imported waste paper is in fact one of the important aspects of China's paper industry.

Waste paper is a special commodity because it is picked up, not produced. Therefore, it is not surprising that even the same waste paper number is of uneven quality, but if the domestic paper mills can communicate with their foreign suppliers regularly and provide specific information (including arrival time, container number, and use evaluation, etc.), They understand that the waste paper supplied by waste paper packers is suitable for the use of the paper mill, so that the stable supply of these baling plants or waste paper of similar quality should be helpful in stabilizing the product quality of the mill.

According to the author's knowledge, an American waste paper exporter has long supplied a Tianjin paper mill with the No. 3 waste paper recognized by the plant. Since the quality has been relatively stable, although the price is slightly higher, it is still welcomed by the plant. I think this is also an example.

The wages of sorters in American waste paper packaging plants are very high. Therefore, it is impossible for packing plants to subdivide the collected waste papers. If some high-numbered American waste papers are tested, several types are selected in China. Re-sorting may also have better returns. But this must have two preconditions. First, there must be multiple small batch imports. There are specific data after sorting. After sorting, there is a stable user of waste paper. A mature waste paper is stable. The second is to have a steady supply of goods, to find reputable waste paper exporters, and to establish good business relations with domestic sorting plants. Without a stable source of supply, sorting is also difficult to sustain in the long term.
