In general, printing companies have adopted the use of diluting agents in dark ink to obtain pale ink. Diluting agent is also called as lightening agent. It is a kind of transparent or semi-transparent auxiliary agent. Adding ink mainly plays a role in diluting color and reducing ink saturation. Diluents commonly used are Weili oil, white ink, white oil, bright light and so on.

First, the characteristics and application of diluent

Diluents generally do not change the ink's adhesion, printability, and other rheological properties. Obviously, the more the diluting agent is added, the lighter the formed ink is. However, it should be noted that after the diluting agent is added, the proportion of the pigment in the ink will also decrease, so if it is added, the hue of the printing pattern will be grayed out and the desired glossiness and saturation will be lost. Under normal circumstances, the amount of diluting agent should be controlled at 10% to 30%.

Unlike dilutants, dilutants are pigment-free inks composed of a resin and a solvent. In the printing process, if an ink is found to be dirty after dilution with thinner, poor fluidity, poor transfer, adding a dilute agent can solve this problem. The diluting agent has a better ink transfer rate and has no hiding power. It can be printed separately to meet the special needs of printed products. For example, if there is a need for moisture-proof and ink-repelling layers, the diluting agent can be printed at the end to allow the colorless diluting agent film to “seal” the ink layer so that the moisture in the air does not easily enter the ink layer and the interior of the paper. Thus play a role in moisture-proof, so that the ink on the print is not easy to fall off when rubbed by hand. At the same time, the final use of dilute printing alone can change the surface roughness of the printed ink layer to change the reflection of the ink layer on the light, making the print appear brighter and deeper.

Diluents have different effects when used on different occasions. Such as when adjusting the color separation deviation of the printing plate, it is a color-reducing agent; in the case that the printing speed is allowed to increase, it is added in a small amount; it is a color-enhancing agent; adding in Chen Mo-li to increase the gloss and firmness is a supplement to restore the performance of Chen Mo. Adding in the ink with poor performance is an improving agent; adding a diluting agent in the ink does not affect the addition of the diluent, but can also add thinner, which is a cost-saving agent for reducing the cost. In short, the use of diluting agent is very extensive, especially for low-speed printing machines with poor ink supply cycle performance.

Through experiments, the effects of dilute agent addition on the hue, saturation and brightness of the three primary inks were tested and analyzed. The conclusions obtained can provide guidance for printing companies to use dilute agents.

The above three color inks and diluting agent are selected, and the diluting agent is respectively added into the three primary color inks, and the content of the diluting agent is added to each color ink (mass percentages are 0, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30, respectively). %, mix it thoroughly, and proof on the printability instrument respectively.The printing pressure is 100N, the ink volume is 2ml, after the ink is dry, measure the R, G, B values ​​on the 18 ladders with a spectrophotometer and convert them into HSB (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) color space.

Third, the experimental results and analysis

The data of the RGB color space is converted and processed to obtain the data of the HSB color space. According to the data, the hue, saturation, and lightness of the three primary inks with different proportions of diluting agents were analyzed.

The hue of the blue ink fluctuates around 199°, the hue of the magenta ink fluctuates around 324°, and the hue of the yellow ink fluctuates around 58°, almost becoming a straight line, with no noticeable change. Therefore, the amount of the diluting agent is 30. Within 3%, the effect on the hue of the three primary inks is not significant.

The saturation of the blue ink does not change with the increase of the diluting agent content, and the saturation of the magenta ink and the yellow ink decreases with the increase of the diluting agent content. When the amount of diluting agent exceeds 20%, the saturation of magenta ink decreases sharply; while in yellow ink, when the diluting agent content is between 0 and 25%, the saturation level does not change, and after exceeding 25%, it begins to drop substantially.

The blueness of the blue ink shows a slowly increasing trend as the amount of diluting agent increases from 0 to 10%. It remains unchanged after reaching 10%, and then starts to rise again from 15%. Magenta ink brightness increases slowly with dilute agent content from 0 to 10%. It increases from 15% to 20% and continues to rise. After reaching 20%, it stays constant in the short range and continues to rise. The yellow ink brightness remained constant as the diluting agent content increased from 0 to 20%, and decreased from 20% to 25%, and remained unchanged after reaching 25%.
